Kalvi, the Tamil word for “Education” is also the name for our mission – an acronym for “Knowledge And Literacy through Voluntary Initiatives”.
At Kalvi, we are committed to lend a helping hand to young children acquire their best possible asset and life skill – a high school education.
With over 50% of Indian school children either not enrolling for high school education or dropping out mid-way, the task of ensuring that poor children, especially from rural areas, complete the school education is enormous.
As a charitable trust dedicated to help this gigantic task in some measure, Kalvi offers financial assistance to needy children to cover fees, books or materials and for infrastructure improvements at deserving rural schools in India.
The assistance provided will be in the form of cash or materials, depending upon the circumstances. While there is a merit and income criterion, Kalvi helps children irrespective of religion or caste.
Scholarships given to 80 school girls from low income families, yet another year.
KALVI classes commenced in October 2020 after a prolonged lockdown. About 30 students in all from the previous year batches majorly from PS and Children’s Garden schools enrolled for Std VIII & Std IX. Classes were conducted online through Google Meet platform for two hours every day. The sessions have been interactive with students participating with interest. Though increase in numbers did not happen due to various challenges, the year’s syllabus was successfully completed with good learning outcomes. Open book tests were conducted with time limits and corrections done which benefitted the students learning immensely. With schools sending only recorded videos of lessons, the live interaction of KALVI online classes were useful to the students for clarification of doubts and better understanding of the subject. And the most heartening fact was that lot of students who didn’t even have a phone, internet access or the money for the same somehow managed to share phones at home and attend the engaging KALVI classes during the pandemic situation.
